Psychotherapy and counselling for couples

Relationships are both the source of our greatest pleasure and happiness, and also our deepest distresses. Usually intimate partner relationships have the greatest capacity to both hurt or to heal us, or both. Despite their importance, often people find it hard to find effective guidance and support to nurture their relationships through difficult times.

Couple and relationship counsellors and therapists can help you to have the conversations that feel impossible, or that you may not have even realised that you need to have with your partner. It is an opportunity to explore and share you and your partner's hopes and needs, and to learn to respond to each other with kindness and integrity.

About relationship difficulties

All of us grow up in normal families - normal to us because at least initially in life we don't know of anything else. As we grow older we usually begin to become aware of the difficulties and issues in our family of origin that once seemed unquestionably normal. We may have an understanding that their are ways of relating that we have inherited from our families that just don't work. Despite this insight, once we are in a relationship difficulty, and embroiled also in the unresolved difficulties that our partner has from their family of origin, it can seem almost impossible to find a way back to a truly satisfying relationship. Couples therapists and relationship counsellors can help transform painful and hopeless seeming relationship difficulties into opportunities for self discovery and growth.

Couples counselling

A good couples counsellor responds to the needs of the unique couple they are working with. Sometimes the need is for planning or practical skills that have worked for other couples who have faced similar challenges. At other times the counsellor may need to help couples to bear intense emotions such as anger, grief, fear, or longing, in order to reconnect and heal. Working with a couple's counsellor allows you to have someone alongside you who does not take sides with either partner, and who has the health of the relationship as their primary goal. For many couples this has saved them a great deal of suffering, and has saved their relationship.

*Couples counselling available with Michael Apathy only.
