Sex, gender and sexuality

"We tell ourselves that intimacy (and marriage) takes two people who are willing to work at it-but, unfortunately, we rarely have the slightest inkling of our "job" assignments in this project."   ― David Schnarch

Please note that we do not offer couples sessions, only individual sessions.

Many of us at some point in our lives experience difficulties or confusion regarding sex, sexuality or our identity. These areas exert powerful influences on how we feel about ourselves, how we perceive ourselves and are perceived, and whether we feel connected or isolated. Given how immensely important and personal sexual energy and identity is, it's often very difficult to talk about what’s going on with others and we can end up feeling confused, lost and alone. Talking to a therapist who is comfortable with and knowledgeable about issues of sex and sexuality can help save us a great deal of unnecessary suffering, and can help significantly with our present or future relationships, and how we understand our own sexuality or gender.

Common sex, gender and sexuality issues:
  • differences in level of sexual desire between partners
  • low libido
  • difficulties with sexual intimacy
  • difficulty engaging in sex
  • difficulty experiencing pleasure or orgasm during sex
  • anxiety, guilt or shame relating to sex
  • sex addictions or compulsions
  • infidelity
  • difficulty or confusion with finding one's own sexuality or gender identity (LGBTQ+).

Issues with sexual orientation, gender identity, sexual dysfunction

How can psychotherapy or counselling for sexuality, gender identity and sex help?

Often the most difficult part of working through issues of gender identity, sex or sexuality is the first step - making contact with a therapist and beginning to discuss with them this intimate and private part of our lives. The therapist will do their best to help you feel as comfortable as possible, and to convey genuine warmth, a non-judgmental attitude, and a desire to help with the issue that brought you to therapy. Sometimes the therapist will give pieces of practical advice or exercises to help address the difficulties, or at other times they might take a role of listening carefully and helping to uncover the roots of the presenting issues - often therapy incorporates a blend of practical aspects and developing understanding to create change.
