James WeaverCounsellor and Psychotherapy Practitioner
Based in Hokitika, West Coast Currently offering only online therapy sessions (telehealth) My Background
I became a psychotherapy practitioner after many years as a school teacher. I was a teacher because I wanted to help students thrive. Within teaching I realised the limitations of my occupation in doing that. It also began to dawn on me that I wasn’t thriving in my own life. My theory of how my life should be and my reality were starkly different. I had a range of addiction issues, would get anxious and release my anxiety in behaviours that were destructive to myself and those around me. My own attempts to curb these behaviours had very minimal effect and left me feeling in despair. Eventually I found my way to therapy and began to study psychotherapy as a way to make a difference to my own life. The understanding and experience this brought was hugely beneficial and has helped me to thrive beyond what I thought was possible. Training and working as a teacher has given me insight and understanding of the human developmental stages that are crucial to psychotherapeutic work and also understandings about the different ways people learn on an intellectual, emotional and physical level. I have experience working with a range of people from different cultures, gender identifications and ways of being. As a teacher I have done a range of training in bicultural and multicultural inclusivity and I apply this to the way I work as a therapist as they are applicable. How I work As a therapist I will work with you to improve your symptoms by understanding the patterns and the driving forces that cause these problems in your life. I bring a sense of curious and non judgemental inquiry to the process. This therapy is yours and your goals and desires for the therapy are the central. I am doing ongoing training and supervision in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, with Michael Apathy and Selina Clare, and I follow the code of ethics of the NZAP (New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists). I confidentially video record all of my appointments, and review those appointments to ensure that my clients get the most benefit they can from the therapy. Please note I am currently unable to see clients who are using the Work and Income counselling subsidy, more details here. Online Therapy Online therapy and counselling sessions are a versatile, flexible and time efficient means of getting the help you need. As an online therapist I use video meeting tools such as Skype, Zoom or Google Meet to have private in person therapy sessions with people from all over Aotearoa New Zealand. Being an online therapist I have found video therapy sessions to be an effective means of creating positive change through resolving mental health difficulties. The research backs this.
